PHYSICAL GOLD FOR BEGINNERS

Gold coins vs. bars: a beginner’s buying guide

Both can provide physical gold ownership, but the product size, premium, and way you plan to sell matter. Start with the purchase you can explain in plain English.

01

Compare fine gold content first

A product’s total weight and its fine gold content are not always the same. The one-ounce American Gold Eagle contains one troy ounce of fine gold in an alloy. Compare products by stated fine ounces, not just diameter, appearance, or the number of pieces.

02

Understand why premiums differ

Manufacturing, size, distribution, and the specific issue can affect the amount charged above the underlying metal value. Smaller pieces may offer more flexibility when selling part of a position, while larger formats can have different per-ounce economics. Compare an actual written quote rather than assuming every bar is cheaper than every coin.

03

Picture the sale before the purchase

If you expect to sell a small amount at a time, consider the size of each item. A larger bar is one unit; several smaller coins can be sold in separate quantities. That flexibility must be weighed against purchase premiums and the bid offered for each product.

  • Identify the fine ounces and total cost for each option.
  • Request the current resale bid for the same quantity.
  • Ask whether condition, packaging, or authentication affects that bid.
04

Keep bullion and collectible goals separate

Bullion is commonly compared by metal content and premium. Historic coins can have pricing driven by date, rarity, and grade. Buying a collectible because you like its history is different from selecting a retirement bullion holding. Ask for the reasoning behind the proposed product.

05

Decide whether this is a personal or IRA purchase

For personal ownership, understand payment, delivery, security, and insurance. For a precious metals IRA, confirm the exact product and custody arrangement with the custodian before purchasing. A coin-or-bar preference alone does not establish IRA eligibility. Use the planning guide to work through the account decision first.
